I was in Newtown for dinner Saturday night. After sushi I convinced my friend to visit the Parrot with me for a beer. She's not a beer drinker, but a really good sport. I had read Lew Bryson's blog about his Parrot visit last week. I was hoping they might have read it, too, but my experience was almost identical.
Got there about 9 and the bar area was PACKED. And BRIGHT. Too bright for a "pub", IMHO. We wended our way to the opposite side of the large rectangular bar where we managed to a) review all the taps along the way and b) find a spot to get the attention of a server. All the servers look very professional.
The guest ordered an Amstel. Out of her comfort zone but I think she felt obligated to order a draft and they didn't have Heineken draft. I inquired about a tap I couldn't read. "That's River Horse", I was told. River Horse
WHAT?, I asked. I got a look from him like "
why are you asking that?" So he returned to the handle and reported "Hop Hazard". He was lost at that point. From the view on my side of the handles, it looked like I ordered one of the most adventuresome of the drafts.
They call themselves a sports pub and I have to complement them on the number and size of flat screens available. They are hung high which is no problem given the ceiling height. But the ceiling height adds to the noise level, and that along with the lighting really detracts from the ambience.
We arrived fully fueled from a HUGE boat of sushi at O Ta Ya (very good!), so we didn't sample the menu. But the dishes paraded past for others, and I've got to tell you the pizza looked and smelled REALLY good. You could smell the wood fired oven as each pizza paraded on by.
In comparison to my favorite Irish pub,
The Schanachie in Ambler, the Parrot's more sport than Irish, and more bowling alley than pub.
As a novelty destination, the Parrot will probably draw well from area boomers. While
Friends Pub may feel the drain,
Isaac's has no worries regarding being the reigning beer bar in Newtown.
