Email Announcement on 2009 Sam Adams Longshot Competition

This was in an email from Sam Adams today. Thought people might be interested.

Attention Homebrewers!

We wouldn't be drinking Samuel Adams beers today if our founder and brewer, Jim Koch, didn't know a thing or two about homebrewing. Jim brewed the first batches of Samuel Adams Boston Lager in his kitchen and sold bottles bar to bar from his brief case. It's for that reason that we have a special place in our hearts for homebrewing and why we're proud to announce the 2009 Samuel Adams® American Homebrew Contest®! Here's your chance to have your homebrew brewed, packaged and nationally distributed in the 2010 Samuel Adams LongShot® package! All you have to do is brew a winning entry, send it in to face a panel of certified beer judges and beat out thousands of other entries. Easy, right? Well maybe not but no one ever said taking a shot at glory was easy!

Go to and learn all the details including how much time you have to brew and ship it to us (less than you think!). You can even purchase homebrew supplies; watch the instructional "The Art of Homebrewing" video hosted by our own Jim Koch or learn some tips of the trade.

Here are some quick facts:
Beer Submission Window: April 15th - May 1st, 2009
Prizes: All finalists will be awarded a trip to attend the 2009 Great American Beer Festival® in Denver, CO where Samuel Adams will announce the 3 winning recipes to be included in the 2010 LongShot six-pack.

Anyone else enter the Longshot?

I got a couple in just under the wire; a Witbier and a Chocolate Hazelnut Porter. Delivered just 24 hours before the deadline. My entry status still says "pending". Hope they made it in one piece.

Good luck. I got caught up and never able to send any.

Finally got my score sheets back from this competition today. My Wit got a 37 but didn't place. The CHP scored a 35, placed first in its group and advanced to a mini best-of-show. The score sheets came in a padded envelope with this...

Not sure if everyone who entered got a hat but it was quite a nice surprise! I encourage everyone to enter this contest next year; no entry fee and you get some great feedback from the judges.
