February Meeting - It's all about the Hops!

Hop Discussion

The February meeting’s topic will be all about HOPS. For anyone who knows me, this is one of my favorite subjects. I will be doing a presentation outlining hop varietals and characteristics, hop chemistry, different ways to use hops, and growing your own hops. I will also be serving different varieties of hop teas to evaluate hop aromas/tastes and giving away a couple ounces of hops from my private hop collection.

Review the Brew

We will be bringing back the Review the Brew segment back this month and I would like some volunteers to submit their brews. Since the theme is hops this month, I encourage anyone who has a slightly hop forward brew to volunteer (ESB, Pale ale, English and American IPA, American Amber or Brown). I’d like to showcase different hoppy varieties.

Updates

A couple of us will be working at the War of the Worts competition, so I hope to have a complete update of the ALEiens results and how the competition went.

I have 2 bottles of my Amarillo Ale left made with all Amarillo hops. I can put those aside if needed.
I also just kegged a big amber ale, 6.8% and 79 ibu, bittered with magnum and centennial and cascade as flavor and aroma. That should be carbonated by the meeting.

Jeff, sounds like a great topic. If you need any hops for the presentation, let me know and I'll donate some. I have a lot of varieties in stock right now.

I'll also bring some hops for the giveaway part of your presentation. Let me know what you are giving away so I don't duplicate the varieties.

Christian, are those 2 bottles 12oz or 22oz? The Amber sounds tasty too and it will be super fresh. Though the single variety Amarillo ale would be good too, but 2 12oz bottle may not be enough for everyone to taste.

Paul, Thanks for the donation. I will get back to you on it. I will be working on my talk this weekend and will go through my hops this weekend.

im very excited for this. im curious about these teas. we are hoping that our first batch of beer is drinkable that night so we can bring and see what people think. its the HopNog Ipa with an extra oz of simco hops then durring bottling made a crappy hop back and dry hopped it 2 times before it got bottled. we could use some advice since we've only done 2 beers so far

Bring it! Getting and giving advice is what this group and site are for.

The Amarillo Ale is only 12oz, so I'll hold off on those then. BUT, I can always bottle up several 22oz bottles of the amber ale for the meeting. Let me know how many of those you want me to bring.

Usual 3-4 12oz bottles is fine for the Review the Brew section. This is when we highlight specific members beers and everyone tastes and discusses together. Usually at the end of the meetings we have free for all segment where we all share our beers. For that, usually 2-3 beers is fine. We all just take like 2-3 oz samples.

I should be bottling a pale ale tonight. Assuming that it carbs in time(I believe that is should) and that I'm permitted to attend the meeting(may be a dumb question, but I just signed up for the site today) I'd love to share it.

All are welcome to the meetings. We are all about sharing and learning. Bring the pale ale.

Great topic, can't wait to learn more and try others' beers!

I'll have a my second batch, a young and fairly hoppy IPA (approx 90 IBUs) ready by then and will bring a few bottles.
