Spreading the Joys of Homebrewing Throughout Philadelphia and Its Suburbs

I'm thinking about getting a stainless steel racking tube but aren't they harder to clean b/c the steel interacts more adversely with cleaning chemicals? Obviously the advantages would be durability and more resistant to contaminants.

stainless steel is the best choice for most materials concerning brewing.....it will not interact with the cleaning chemicals in any adverse way.

I agree with Christian... that's why everything at most breweries shine the way they do - lots of stainless!

Tom, you may be thinking of bleach + stainless. It's only a problem if in contact too long or not rinsed properly from stainless. We shouldn't be using bleach anyway... there are too many other cleaners out there that do a better job without the "cons" associated with bleach (remember, bleach will affect the taste of your beer too if not rinsed properly).

By the way, I've got a couple stainless racking canes. I cut one of them in half and used it for my carboy-top-cropping gadget . They're great and will last a lifetime. Don't have to worry about them scratching and harboring bacteria the way you do the plastic ones.
