ALEiens Homebrew Club

Spreading the Joys of Home Brewing Throughout Philadelphia and the Universe!

I'd like to get a group of people together to help test out some new hop styles. This is open to anyone. The plan is to get a bulk order of a new type of hop and have everyone brew with the hops. The recipes are open to whatever you want to brew, the only catch is there can only be one single hop type throughout the brew.

I'm looking to start this within the next month, so if you are interested, reply to this thread. Some of the hops we can choose are:

  • Apollo
It's like Centennial, Columbus and Amarillo had a baby (and peed on it). Emphasis is on Orange with resiny and spicy components. Make no mistake, this is a Super High Alpha, not for the squeemish. It's original name was 01051, but that just wasn't catchy, so they went with Apollo
  • Bravo
Best I could find is that it is similar to Zeus or Nugget.
  • Citra
Citrus, peach, apricot, passion fruit, grapefruit, lime, melon, gooseberry, lychee fruit, pineapple, mango, papaya and other tropical fruit flavors and aromas. So, ah, fruity.
  • Sorchi Ace
A Japanese winner by all counts with its powerful lemon aroma, high bittering value and flavorful personality.
  • Summit
Quite new on the scene (2003) but the consensus is very positive with its “peak” bittering value coupled with robust citrus notes of orange, tangerine and grapefruit. Receiving accolades as an ideal hop for the ultimate Pale Ale.
Depending on hops style and availability, we can pick up a couple pounds to and divide these up between the brewers.

Sounds intriguing, I`ll get in on that.
What's your vote on a Hop Variety.
I'm up for this. I'll vote for either Apollo or Citra.
I'm down with Citra. NikoBrew.com has it available for $29.00 a pound.
I`ll vote Citra. With all those flavors that will be interesting.
So it only looks like 3 of us. We can split a pound up 3 ways. 5oz or so each. I think we can do any number of styles with that.
1lbs of Citra has been ordered. I hope to have it by the next meeting so I can give it to you guys if you are there. If not, we can meet up once I get it. It came to $34 with shipping from Nikobrew.com, so like $11 bucks each.

If anyone else wants to jump in, you can get Citra at niko brew, not sure many other places have it.
Ack, how did I miss this :-(

Citra sounds interesting, especially for a weizen recipe I'm working on...
Feel free to order it off of the Niko Brew site. I just did yesterday. Not use if anyone else is interested, cause by buying it by the pound you save some money.
I think I will. If anybody here wants to put together a second order, let me know by the middle of next week.

Thanks for the info Jeff, sounds like a fun chance to experiment.
Bill and Josh,

Our pound of Citra hops just came in the mail. Man, do these things smell awesome. I will have them all broken down and vacuum sealed for the meeting tomorrow. If either of you are not able to make it, I will keep them in the freezer until we meet up.
Im in to split some Citra hops... I know it's late, but I'll throw in for a second order!!
