ALEiens Homebrew Club

Spreading the Joys of Home Brewing Throughout Philadelphia and the Universe!

Let me start by saying I am a little excited. Also I am unemployed and
bored. I decided to make a wort chiller. I am not mechanically inclined so i
was a bit skeptical. So I tried it and it looked pretty poor but wanted
to test it. I boiled 3 gallons of water in my brew pot. It was at about
208 degress f. I know 212 is boiling but i got bored and didnt think it
would work. It went from 208 to 75 in about 11 minutes. I think that is
good. Can someone tell me if that time is good? Would wort be slower?  Also I am an extract brewer so I dont really need to get it that low because I will be topping it off with cool water.

Hey Ron,

Dunno if wort cools slower than water (although I'm sure our resident thermodynamics experts can weigh in on that), but 11 minutes from 208 to 75 is pretty darn tootin good. Nicely done!

I think wort may cool slower due to its density, but you should be close.
Got a pic? How much did it wind up costing you?
The pics were attached, not embedded into the post. Look below it.
The pics are attached. It ended up costing me 25 dollars. But then I could not attach it to my sink correctly. Pretty easy if you can use a garden hose, I think you can get an attachment for like 5 dollars at homedepot. I needed to make something at the hardware store to connect to my kitchen faucet, it cost me another 10. So for me it was 35.
I use an adapter to attach mine. I have a garden hose connector on my tubing that I adapt to fit my sink.

11 minutes is plenty speedy, I think I can get mine down to 5 if I use both ice bath and chiller, and whirlpool.
